Coach Mike's 1/10/2008 Update

Hi Parents and Coaches:

Here is the ”almost weekly“ update.  Please take a moment to read:

1. Still have players with outstanding forms, etc needed to be issued game jerseys and ability to play in games and tournaments.  I have spoken to a number of parents and many have rectified the deficiencies, but still need some players to get their info in.

2.  We strongly encourage every player to have protection for the groin!  We recommend the ”Nut Hut“, which can be purchased on line or at Sports Authority.    Huge improvement over the past.

3.  We encourage every player to have two fitted mouthpieces, one spare stored in their gear bag in a sealed bag.

4.  A schedule change:  April 12th we were scheduled for a crossover game with Shreveport teams playing NOLA teams in Lafayette.  There are conflicts at the Shreveport end for this year, so we have scheduled a game with Mandeville, to be played in Mandeville.  We’ll get you the details on time, etc, as soon as we work that out at their end.  We will play both the Varsity and JV.

5.  JV Schedule Change:  De La Salle is not able to field a JV this year.  Therefore, we plan to schedule at least one match with Christian Brothers.  We’ll keep you posted.

6.  DON’T FORGET OUR EXTRA PRACTISE:  February 7th, Thursday Morning, from 10-12, we’ll have a practice in preparation for the Sugar Bowl Tournament, which begins the next day (8th – 10th).    This is in Mardi Gras Holidays, so there should be no conflict.  We need this, as we’re off school the entire week!

7. Sugar Bowl Tournament:  8th – 10th February (end of M.G. Holidays), we play starting Friday night at 6 or 6.30 PM.  We have been invited to a clinic by Stickhead for Mandeville.  It begins at 3 PM, but we will want our guys present 11/2 hours before our game, and dressed and ready one hour before the game.  Plan to be at the fields (immediately past Zephyr Stadium, same side on Airline Hwy) not later than 4.15PM and plan for traffic.  We will play again Saturday (9th) probably at 10 AM...with additional games after that.  We’ll keep you posted.   The tournament has teams from out-of-state coming, so this will be a fun weekend for our team.

8.  In regards to our away games, we would like to minimize the number of players that drive apart from their families.  We’ll work to arrange carpooling as these games approach.  Look for one of our support staff to connect with you regarding car pools.

9.  Men’s Mardi Gras Tournament:  The NOLA Men’s Lacrosse team is hosting their M.G. Tournament the weekend of 25-27 January.  We’ll publish their schedule and hope our players will come see at least one game.  This will help our guys understand the flow of the game better – making us a better team!   We’ll also ask some experienced players to help staff the tournament.

Thanks for your time, please look over all of this and mark your calendars – and let’s get the pain in the rear paperwork done!

Coach Mike's 12/27/2007 Newsletter

Dear Parents,

Here is the latest news on our Jesuit Lacrosse team.  Knowing your have dozens of emails and letters in the post, could I impose and ask you to read this – the updates are important. I’ve cut the additional ”cheering“ comments, to get you the details!

  • Christmas Clinic: 1 Day only, not our original three

    • We are going to have a one day clinic the 5th of January, a Saturday.  This is an important day we want to make the most and hope every player can be there.
    • We had a three day (3-5 Jan) scheduled, but due to Denver’s pros being scheduled by their sponsors, we’re on our own.  Due to our coachs' work schedules, we can only support the one day.
    • We have some good work planned though, which will kick start us with our one month of preparation before the tournament and league season.

  • You’ll find the latest schedule for our games and tournaments attached.

    • The first competition match we have is our Sugar Bowl Tournament the weekend after Mardi Gras.  *Please note the additional practise to prepare for the games, scheduled Thursday that week, during our normal time.  We do not yet know the times of play at the tournament, but expect that we will play Varsity and JV games Friday night, and several on Saturday.  If we make it to the championship games, we’ll play Sunday as well.
    • We begin season league games the very next weekend, through the middle of May, with our new Louisiana State Championship Tournament, so seniors, you’ll go out with a bang!
    • The only games not on the schedule are some scrimmage type games we’ll do with the newly forming teams, such as Mandeville, Rummel, St. Augustine, etc.  We may play those on game days, possibly on a practise day.
    • The 8th and 9th grade players may also have the opportunity to play some scrimmage games against their peers at a couple of other schools, and Christian Brothers sometime during the season.

  • MUST HAVE INFO TO ISSUE GAME JERSEYS

    • We will issue our game jerseys in just a couple of weeks.  We want to issue jerseys to every player.  BUT....
    • We posted the post cards out with needed information in mid-December.
    • The new requirements (e.g. US Lax) is required of us by Jesuit, so it is a must.  This is the item most missing.
    • Some of you returning families may ask why we need new registrations forms.  There are so many changes to our database with people moving post-K, that we need to have updated info.
    • We need all of those items to be able to issue the jerseys!  Therefore, please look at the post card and get the needed documentation, check, etc.
    • If you lost the post card or question if you have all needed documents in, please ask, we’ll be glad to communicate it to you.
  • Also attached is a jersey roster number, requested by several parents to track the players.
  • In addition, several parents asked where they can get a copy of the rules.  The simplest means is to go to http://www.uslacrosse.org and go to the rules.  We use NCAA varsity rules, with minor adjustments for high school, e.g. Period times are twelve minutes. There are several rules versions, look for the NCAA rules.  You can download it as a PDF.
  •

    • Team roster adjustments:

      • Throughout the fall, we played many players on the varsity squad who were struggling in their skills to compete.  The hardest decisions we as a coaching team have had in is making these roster adjustments.
      • First, the reason – the team has to compete.  Secondly, we want these players to get the most playing time, and to get the development needed to compete at the varsity level in their junior/senior years.  Some players are participating the first year as sophomores.  Therefore, we’re making some adjustments in the coming weeks.
      • We will send a select few players to JV to practise and participate at that level.  We will ask them to dress for varsity games, knowing they probably will not play during competitive games, but very well possibly will play some, not a lot – but some, during games where our team strength allows them to contribute without high levels of risk, thus giving them experience at the varsity level.
      • Additionally, we will give a select few the option to go to JV, as they will play lots more. They also will dress for varsity games with the same conditions as immediately above.  If they choose to remain with varsity, they will know these conditions.
      • This is a hard choice for these select players.  We DEFINITELY WANT THEM TO CONITNUE!  It isn’t an insult, but a development decision we make for them, for their future.  If they play with JV they will get the skill development we no longer have time to develop with varsity, as the remainder of the year, through our season, the practise will focus on more advanced team play and skills.
      • So, we ask your support, for us and for the players we move.  In the future, as we know the players and team better, we’ll play developing players with JV and move up selectively. We needed this year to develop this working knowledge.  So, if your son is one of those players, we ask you to help them with the move, and to help them remain committed, so they can and will be the varsity players in the future.  We promise they will get lots of play time in the coming months of season play.

Lastly, thanks for your many appreciative notes and emails.  We, the entire coaching team, truly enjoy every day we ”get to“ invest in your sons.  They are a blast to work with.  We look forward to seeing you all at the games.  Your presence, even for 13-18 year olds is a HUGE encouragement for them.  Thank you for the opportunity to invest in them!

    Coach Mike's 10/10/2007 Newsletter

    Players and Parents,

Here are the latest reminders, and news you’ll need....

    • New Team Gear...

      • It’s coming in!  We got home after practice to several more boxes coming in with UPS!
      • We’re going to issue the new team gear on the 22nd, Monday, by the chapel in the parking lot.
      • If you are waiting for gear, or still need gear, you need to connect with Chad and let him know what you need, including size, in order for him to have it ready for that day – to save everyone time.

    • Jerseys...

      • We’ll issue practice jerseys on Monday the 22nd after school – with the new gear, by the Chapel.
      • We may issue game jerseys at the same time.

    • Paperwork, Medical/physicals and registration fee...

      • We got a lot in, but still need a great deal of players to turn in their paperwork.
      • We also need the registration fees to cover our operating budget and equipment.
      • FINALLY we MUST get the physicals turned in ASAP.  We are required physicals to even practice.  PARENTS – we need your help.

    • Practice...

      • Next practice is October 23rd, and 25th at Scout Island.
      • We will be practicing twice a week from here on.  Follow the new schedule we’ve sent.
      • Uniform is full gear – FULL gear!
      • You MUST bring 1-2 water bottles every day!  YOU’LL NEED IT!

    • Our Team...

      • We’re rebuilding a team after losing a HUGE host of seniors.  We can win and set the pace as we did last year.  There are some very good players – but we have to work as a team.
      • Therefore, we MUST be a hugely and highly committed team of precision.

        • Hence, we will train you every practice in skills, game rules, strategy, etc.  Your presence to be there every game is vital.
        • We must make the very most of our practices – and therefore, we must be disciplined and organised at every practice.

      • We are working to step up the speed and discipline of how we conduct practices.  So, players, we need you moving at a high speed when we direct the team to gather, move to the next drill, etc.  We need you to be in lines and organised, ready to execute the drill.  We need you to work both your favored hand, and your weak hand equally.  The game is not played on one side of the field.

      • Right now, we’re not yet a team!  We have a huge new group of players joining us, some upper class players.  We’re not yet thinking, acting, operating as a team.  This starts off the field.  I am asking each player to think through the team building attitudes that help us become a team.  This includes being together at school, lunch, weekends, and especially our attitude together at practice.  We play our first scrimmage in five weeks.

    • Mouthpieces...Read this carefully!

      • They are NOT optional – they protect you from concussions and your teeth
      • It is MANDATORY that these mouthpieces be of color, not clear
      • We are requiring them to be attached to the face mask with the normal mouth piece strap
      • Mold the mouthpiece to your upper teeth to fit snugly – we need you able to communicate on the field!  We are going to communicate a LOT MORE.
      • If you have questions, talk to us.

    • PARENTS....

    • There will be 135,000 students in high school sports who get concussions this school year.
    • We are aggressively working to protect our players from ANY of these injuries.
    • We will send you a separate email next week regarding this, and how you can help – starting with mouthpieces.  It also includes a program where your student can do an online survey now that can be used as a guide if he were to get an injury.
    • You must know we will work hard, and the referees are standing with us, to insure we DO NOT get any injuries like these.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.  Study hard and excel in exams next week.  We’ll see you on the 23rd.

Parents Lacrosse Experience at the Fly on October 6

As we promised, we have a time this Saturday at 10 AM to orient you to the game. We’ll be up on the Fly, behind the zoo, at the big baseball diamond (Wolfpack Field) on the East end of the Fly.

You’ll be able to shoot, have the game explained, handle the equipment, and meet the coaches.  We only expect to be there an hour, but we have two reserved.

Mike's mobile number is (985) 373-1755.  Call if you get lost!   You’ll be able to find us up on the fly ...look for a 15 passenger white van... The kind you see with the recovery teams serving in the city.

    Hope you can make it.

Jays Open Practice in the Roussel Building

Coach Mike greeted more than 50 players for the first practice on October 1, 2007. This was the first time the Blue Jay Lacrosse squad has used the Roussel Building for a practice
